MADE Ecosystem Approach

The Approach

A Healthier Future

The MADE Ecosystem Approach identifies substances that support human and environmental health and advances greater transparency, responsible sourcing, cleaner manufacturing, and continued progress toward safer chemistry.

360º Evaluation

The MADE Ecosystem Approach is the scientific foundation of MADE SAFE Certification. This 360° evaluation considers the potential effects of substances and materials on people, animals, and ecosystems. Its hazard-based and precautionary framework reviews bioaccumulation, environmental persistence, human toxicity, aquatic toxicity, terrestrial toxicity, and contamination concerns.

Each substance is evaluated using the best available information, including the MADE Banned List, authoritative hazard lists, regulatory and Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS), measured data, modeled data, and published scientific research. Significant data gaps and unresolved concerns receive added scrutiny through a precautionary lens.

Early identification of hazard traits guides safer ingredient and material choices, reduces cumulative exposure across product lifecycles, and supports healthier outcomes for people, wildlife, and the environment.

Why It Matters

The goal of the MADE Ecosystem Approach is to identify substances that are safer for people and the planet, while driving industry change towards greater transparency, more responsible sourcing, stronger manufacturing practices, and continued movement away from chemicals of concern.
